… In The Name of Jesus part 1

So often we end our prayers with the phrase … in the name of Jesus, but why do we say that is it just a nice way to end a prayer or is it something more?  In Matthew Jesus tells us how we should pray.

MATTHEW 6:9 PRAY LIKE THIS: OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN, MAY YOUR NAME BE KEPT HOLY.

We give glory to God; it may be taken not as a petition, but as an adoration; as that, the Lord be magnified, or glorified, for God’s holiness is the greatness and glory of all his perfections – Matthew Henry’s Commentary

When we pray like that we are giving the glory to God when we say that we are saying that in our life we will kept His name holy.  It’s not enough just to say it, but we need to do it.  Just to say something has no meaning but when we do what we say that has power behind the words.  Even more when we say that we will keep God’s name holy how powerful is that?  We give Him glory and keep His name holy because He, God gives us daily bread and pardoned our sins. Even when our name is tarnished and put down (which will most likely happen sometime in our lives if it has not happened already) we still need to keep His name holy. The very meaning of God’s name is the reason why we say and do what we do.

The meaning of the word name is a word or phrase that constitutes the distinctive designation of a person or thing.  When we call someone’s name we are calling them by their title or by what constitutes them by what their name is.  The same goes for the Lord God.  When the son of God Jesus came down into the earth it was told by an angel that His name was to be Jesus even it was said that He was to do great things even before He was born. As if His name was with the intent that He would do great and wonderful things on earth.   MATTHEW 1:21 SHE WILL BEAR A SON, AND YOU SHALL CALL HIS NAME JESUS, FOR HE WILL SAVE HIS PEOPLE FROM THEIR SINS.”

LUKE 2:21 AND AT THE END OF EIGHT DAYS, WHEN HE WAS CIRCUMCISED, HE WAS CALLED JESUS, THE NAME GIVEN BY THE ANGEL BEFORE HE WAS CONCEIVED IN THE WOMB.

The meaning of the many names of Jesus are used in the way that His people saw Him.

Elohim is the definition of the all-powerful creator God, when God displays His  power and might by creating the heavens and the earth  PSALM 19:1 THE HEAVENS PROCLAIM THE GLORY OF GOD. THE SKIES DISPLAY HIS CRAFTSMANSHIP. From the heavens, God’s dwelling He looks out into the earth and sees all humanity and comes to the rescue of all His servants.  The heavens remain unaffected by man’s failures and rebellious nature.  The heavens display all of God’s qualities of righteous and wisdom.  The heavens show God’s handiwork and are proof of His existence. In other words know that God is God and the heavens show that God is and creation shows that His hand made all the earth.  Have you ever been to a place that looked like it came from out of a painting and looked around at how beautiful and perfect everything is how everything works so perfectly?  That is God’s hand or His craftsmanship.  Just look up into the sky on a clear night and see all the stars and how great the expanse of space is.  You will be in awe of how awesome God is that is Elohim.

Adonai is when the God was lord MALACHI 1:6 THE LORD OF HEAVEN’S ARMIES SAYS TO THE PRIESTS: “A SON HONORS HIS FATHER, AND A SERVANT RESPECTS HIS MASTER. IF I AM YOUR FATHER AND MASTER, WHERE ARE THE HONOR AND RESPECT I DESERVE? YOU HAVE SHOWN CONTEMPT FOR MY NAME! “BUT YOU ASK, ‘HOW HAVE WE EVER SHOWN CONTEMPT FOR YOUR NAME? How do you show contempt, honor, and respect for the Lord of heaven’s name?  It’s what you do how you act around your family, friends, and those in public.  Your actions speak louder than you words, they also speak to everyone that knows that you know God and also to those who don’t.  This is how we show contempt, honor, and respect for God’s name.  But the question still remains how have you ever shown contempt for God’s name? Spend time with Adonai in all His glory and you will give honor and respect to His name when you see Him as He is.

Jehovah – Yahweh is eternal and unchangeable, to be, to exist, and who always is. This name is unique to God alone. His is the covenant-keeping God.

EXODUS 3:13-14 THEN MOSES SAID TO GOD, “IF I COME TO THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND SAY TO THEM, ‘THE GOD OF YOUR FATHERS HAS SENT ME TO YOU,’ AND THEY ASK ME, ‘WHAT IS HIS NAME?’ WHAT SHALL I SAY TO THEM?” GOD SAID TO MOSES, “I AM WHO I AM.” AND HE SAID, “SAY THIS TO THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL, ‘I AM HAS SENT ME TO YOU.’” God is the great “I Am” who is self-sufficient, all-encompassing who was self-existent, and who will be eternally unchanging and without limitations.  What you need He is what you desire He is.  He is the unchanging unchangeable God He will remain the same when everything else changes He will always be the same.  His name is “I Am” so when you call Him you can count on Him that He will be the “I Am” that can be to you what you need Him to be at that very moment. Are you able to be the one who is able to be sent out with boldness and tell them (the world around you) that Jesus is Yahweh the only one who is not dependent on something else for His existence?  Have confidence that the eternal and unchanging God will give you everything you need to be sent out just be willing to give yourself to Him.

Maccaddeshem is the Lord our sanctifier. LEVITICUS 20:7-8 CONSECRATE YOURSELVES, THEREFORE, AND BE HOLY, FOR I AM THE LORD YOUR GOD. KEEP MY STATUTES AND DO THEM; I AM THE LORD WHO SANCTIFIES YOU.

Jehovah – Rohi is the Lord is my shepherd. PSALM 23:1 THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD; I SHALL NOT WANT.  A shepherd is a guardian that keeps watch over and protects a group of sheep or people from all danger.  Many times in the Lord is referred to as a shepherd in Psalms there are some key verbs that describe what the Great Shepherd – The Lord Jesus does for us, He LETS me rest, He LEADS me beside peaceful streams , He RENEWS my strength, He GUIDES me along right paths,  Your staff PROTECTS and COMFORT me, You PREPARE a feast for me, You HONOR me by anointing my head with oil, Your goodness and unfailing love will PURSUE  me.  Can you say that the Lord Shepherd does all these things for you?  Well believe it because He will let, lead, renew, guide, protect, comfort, prepare, honor and pursue you.  You need to know Him in Psalms it says that the sheep know the shepherd’s voice.  When He is calling when He is doing all these things are you listening and obeying Jehovah – Rohi, do you even know His voice? If not you need to spend the time to get to know your shepherd.

Jehovah – Jireh is the Lord who will provide. GENESIS 22:13-14 AND ABRAHAM LIFTED UP HIS EYES AND LOOKED, AND BEHOLD, BEHIND HIM WAS A RAM, CAUGHT IN A THICKET BY HIS HORNS. AND ABRAHAM WENT AND TOOK THE RAM AND OFFERED IT UP AS A BURNT OFFERING INSTEAD OF HIS SON. SO ABRAHAM CALLED THE NAME OF THAT PLACE, “THE LORD WILL PROVIDE”; AS IT IS SAID TO THIS DAY, “ON THE MOUNT OF THE LORD IT SHALL BE PROVIDED.” This passage took place right after Abraham was about to sacrifice his son Isaac but the Lord intervened and an angel of the Lord told Abraham “Do not hurt him in any way.”  Then Abraham saw that the Lord had provide another sacrifice a ram caught in the thicket.  Abraham called that place Yahweh – Jireh. We are people that are always in lack and are in need of something more whether that is physical or spiritual we are always in want and need. Just like Abraham if you obey and walk with faith that the Lord will provide, then He will be Jehovah – Jireh to you.

Jehovah- Shalom is the Lord is peace.  JUDGES 6:24 SO GIDEON BUILT AN ALTAR TO THE LORD THERE AND CALLED IT THE LORD IS PEACE. TO THIS DAY IT STANDS IN OPHRAH OF THE ABIEZRITES.  According to Judges Gideon was afraid cause after he offered his sacrifice it was consumed with fire and he saw the face of God.  But the Lord said do not be afraid and Gideon built an alter and called it Yahweh – Shalom.  In our lives things of this world and the things of God will come in to our lives that cause fear, grief, worry, and drought but be sure that the Lord will give you a peace witch is beyond the understanding of every man.  Our world may be upside down but we will be in peace, others won’t understand and may say “how can you be so calm and peaceful when there is stress all around” The Lord is peace.

El – Olam is the everlasting God.  ISAIAH 40:28-30 HAVE YOU NEVER HEARD? HAVE YOU NEVER UNDERSTOOD? THE LORD IS THE EVERLASTING GOD, THE CREATOR OF ALL THE EARTH. HE NEVER GROWS WEAK OR WEARY. NO ONE CAN MEASURE THE DEPTHS OF HIS UNDERSTANDING. HE GIVES POWER TO THE WEAK AND STRENGTH TO THE POWERLESS. EVEN YOUTHS WILL BECOME WEAK AND TIRED, AND YOUNG MEN WILL FALL IN EXHAUSTION.  The Lord is the everlasting God He was before time and will be for eternity.  Creation reveals God’s great power and how wise He is. God is not swayed changed by man in any way, but we are every storm throws and tosses us in every direction, but God gives power and strength to us who are weak and powerless to do any about our situation under our own power.  Your age will not help you even if you are young in age you will still become weak, tired and fall into exhaustion.  Know your God, know that He can supply power and strength.

PHILIPPIANS 2:9-10 THEREFORE GOD HAS HIGHLY EXALTED HIM AND BESTOWED ON HIM THE NAME THAT IS ABOVE EVERY NAME, SO THAT AT THE NAME OF JESUS EVERY KNEE SHOULD BOW, IN HEAVEN AND ON EARTH AND UNDER THE EARTH,

Ok so that may sound good and all but what does it matter to me? The name of Jesus is a powerful thing that can be used by us.  When questions and problems come up in our lives the name of Jesus is our answer.  In the bible the men of God gave people the answer they needed.  Peter a man that God used in spreading the name of God by word of mouth.  The name Jesus audibly spoken is very powerful; it can change the situation that you are in.  ROMANS 10:9a …CONFESS WITH YOUR MOUTH THAT JESUS IS LORD …When you confess, say with your mouth the name of Jesus you are openly confirming and telling Jesus and the world that you believe that His name is affective and everything that He has said about Himself is true. In the book Acts every time Peter or any of Jesus’ other disciples performed a healing or a miracle for someone else they did not have some kind of magic but the name of Jesus Christ, which is more powerful than any kind of magic.  For magic is just an illusion not real, but Jesus’ name is very real and do things that man could never manufacturer.

ACTS 2:38 AND PETER SAID TO THEM, “REPENT AND BE BAPTIZED EVERY ONE OF YOU IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF YOUR SINS, AND YOU WILL RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.  Notice what Peter is saying here, repent and be baptized but also he uses the name of Jesus Christ. If he just said repent and be baptized without the Name of Jesus Christ there would be no power behind the words it would be as if he said anything else. Yes we need to repent and be baptized but if you don’t say the name of Jesus what does it mean.  When you say Jesus you are addressing Him.  You can try to do a miracle but without the name of Jesus it will not work, it’s like try to watch TV but it’s not plugged into the outlet, you can try to adjust the antenna push all the buttons but it will not work without the power.  Without Jesus we can try to do many things, we can try to muster up the strength or some kind of force but without the power of Jesus’ name it just won’t work.

ACTS 3:6 BUT PETER SAID, “I HAVE NO SILVER AND GOLD, BUT WHAT I DO HAVE I GIVE TO YOU. IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST OF NAZARETH, RISE UP AND WALK!”  When we come across someone in need we may think that we don’t have anything to give, but in the name of Jesus Christ we have all anybody really needs, because the name of Jesus is everything we or anybody needs.  We just need to believe and be bold, walk out on faith and just give the name of Jesus Christ.  It will work.

ACTS 3:16 AND HIS NAME—BY FAITH IN HIS NAME—HAS MADE THIS MAN STRONG WHOM YOU SEE AND KNOW, AND THE FAITH THAT IS THROUGH JESUS HAS GIVEN THE MAN THIS PERFECT HEALTH IN THE PRESENCE OF YOU ALL.

If we realize what we have, the name of Jesus and have faith that it will work and be affective how much would your world and the life of others be changed?

JOHN 20:31 BUT THESE ARE WRITTEN SO THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE THAT JESUS IS THE CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD, AND THAT BY BELIEVING YOU MAY HAVE LIFE IN HIS NAME.

Here are some questions for you to think about and respond to (on the bottom where the black box is)

  • When you pray do you use the name of Jesus, have they been answered, if yes what is the story(prayer and result)?
  • How has the Name of Jesus affected your life, have you used the name of Jesus to change the life of another?

Great Expectations

This might be a bit delayed but happy New Year. It’s time to start over, last year and everything that goes with it is over. Leave the past in the past and strive for the things that are to come in the future. Philippians 3:13 Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. So now as so many people do is to make a new resolution for the new year. Ok so I know that they never work and not everybody does it, so let’s look at it this way it is time to expect new things. What are you expecting, anticipating to happen in the New Year?

Luke 1:35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.
In the Bible when the baby Jesus was in the womb of Mary I’m sure the Joseph and herself where afraid cause this was something they had never expected would happen to them, but at the same time filled with joy cause they were witnessing the power of God at work in their lives. At the same time the Father in Heaven who sent Jesus to earth was expecting greater things for His son Jesus. That he would ultimately be the example for living a life in constant communication with the Father. He lived a perfect life for 33 1/2 years but that all pales in comparison to the goal of His life to die for our sickness – sin. Seems strange that Jesus’ lived to die, but the Father was always expecting for His son to be the answer to our problem.
It’s seems that man is always focused on the here and now. We are never looking more than a short time ahead of what is to come for us. All our problems keep us down and focused at us and how can I get out or fix the problem that’s in front of us now. God is always looking to the future. He is eagerly expecting to see His children come to maturity.

In the gospel of Luke is the end result.
Luke 24:1- But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise
God always knew that His expectation for His son would come to pass, but now His followers also knew that the Christ had gone up into heaven to be with His father.
Luke 24:36-41 As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?”

Here I wonder do we ever loss site of what we are expecting? Even though they heard His voice and saw His hands and feet they still did not believe. As time goes by our expatiation might slip out of focus and not be in view. So we tend to go about our daily life without expecting anything to happen. But when it does we might not even recognize it. So how important it is to keep out eyes on the goal, to be thinking about it all the time to be praying about it keeping it in focus.

So the question is what are you greatly expecting from God?

Psalm 5:3 In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.

Psalm 62:5 My soul, wait you only upon God; for my expectation is from him.

Jesus is always eager and ready to give His children what they need. The Lord will surely respond to the reply of us His people, if we only cry out to Him. He is a faithful God and His word is true. So let’s expect great things from our great God this year.

Now it’s your turn I would like to hear what you have to say.

What are your expectations this year?

Has the Lord placed something on your heart that you would like to see happen, whether that is through you or the Church?

Hebrews 9:28 so also Christ died once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him.
